CarFit is now available in Hunterdon County!

CarFit is an educational program an educational program created by the American Society on Aging and developed in collaboration with AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles “fit” them.

goHunterdon Community Mobility Coordinator, Cathy Tagilienti has received certification as a trained CarFit technician to conduct CarFit sessions, making CarFit available in Hunterdon County.

Older drivers are often the safest drivers in that they are more likely to wear their seatbelts and less likely to speed or drink and drive.  However, older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur due to the greater fragility of their aging bodies.

Traditional driver safety programs improve adult driver safety by addressing cognitive abilities and skills. However, older drivers can also improve their safety by ensuring their cars are properly adjusted for them.  A proper fit in one’s car can greatly increase not only the driver’s safety but also the safety of others.

During a CarFit session, which takes just 20 minutes, the technician guides the driver through a “12 Step Checklist” that includes seat position, mirror position to reduce blind spots, seatbelt adjustment, and steering wheel position to ensure driver’s “fit” their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. CarFit is NOT a driving evaluation.

CarFit is being offered by appointment at the goHunterdon office. For more information or to schedule a CarFit appointment, contact call Cathy Taglienti, goHunterdon, Community Mobility Coordinator, 908-788-5553 ext 14, or email, ctaglienti@gohunterdon.org
