Rides to Medical Appointments Improving Access to Healthcare

Nearly 400 rides have been provided to patients of Hunterdon Healthcare through a grant secured by goHunterdon from the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey.

The $50,000 grant is being used to subsidize fares for Lyft rides to the Hunterdon Wound Healing Center and select primary care offices affiliated with Hunterdon Healthcare. Rides are scheduled and monitored by goHunterdon staff. The project was launched in January 2020 in response to expressed concerns about patients missing follow up appointments, which in turn, can result in emergency department visits and/or hospitalizations.

“A lack of reliable transportation is regularly cited as a barrier to accessing healthcare”, says Tara Shepherd, goHunterdon Executive Director. “This program helps to reduce the number of appointments that patients may otherwise miss because they have no way to get to their appointment.”

Ninety eight (98%) of scheduled non-emergency medical appointments have been kept since January 2020 as a result of the program.

goHunterdon was recently notified that the grant has been renewed. For more information about this program and other Community Mobility Programs, contact Cathy Taglienti, Community Mobility Program Coordinator, ctaglienti@gohunterdon.org or call 908.788.5553 x 1.
