Bike Hunterdon: A Celebration of Cycling

“The bicycle is a simple solution to some of the world’s most complicated problems”.

The COVID 19 pandemic has changed our lives in ways that were unimaginable just a few short months ago. For many, our daily “hustle/bustle” came to an abrupt halt. For essential workers who are serving on the front lines and those who have been impacted by COVID 19, life has become even more intense.

For many years, goHunterdon sponsored a bicycle event during the month of May to encourage bicycling as a more sustainable form of transportation. The focus was most often on bicycling to work. Challenges were set out to encourage commuters to leave their cars behind and cycle to work instead. Participants would track their rides and tally their miles.

“The idea of a challenge just doesn’t feel right to us this year. We are all facing enough challenges right now,” says Tara Shepherd, Executive Director. “We’ve decided that we are instead going to make the month of May a celebration of all things bicycling in Hunterdon County.”

Hunterdon Bike Month: A Celebration of Cycling kicked off last week as part of goHunterdon’s Bike Hunterdon initiative.  Information on the celebration is being shared on the organization’s Facebook page, a new Bike Hunterdon Instagram account, as well as a Bike Hunterdon Facebook Group.

Throughout the month of May, goHunterdon will be sharing information, inspiration, insight, and fun!  Experienced road and gravel riders, mountain bikers, beginner cyclists, active families, and even those who haven’t been on a bicycle in years, are all welcome to share the joy of cycling.

“Hunterdon County offers so much for bicyclists of all ages and abilities. With peaceful rural roads, scenic vistas, exhilarating mountain bike trails, and miles and miles of a family friendly multi-use paths, there is indeed something for everyone,” says Caryl Harris, goHunterdon Bicycle Specialist.

As goHunterdon continues to social distance, email and social media will be used to communicate and keep participants connected, along with a weekly newsletter filled with ride suggestions, bicycle maintenance tips, safety reminders, and more.
