Street Smart NJ Improves Pedestrian Safety in Hunterdon County

Califon and Flemington are the two most recent Hunterdon communities to benefit from hosting a Street Smart NJ pedestrian safety campaign. Street Smart NJ is a public education, awareness and behavioral change campaign developed by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) and funded through Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) resources, as well as through substantial local in-kind contributions.

Street Smart NJ emphasizes educating drivers and pedestrians on the laws governing pedestrian safety. Since its inception, more than 80 New Jersey communities have participated in Street Smart NJ in some way.

Califon Borough conducted a campaign last spring. Flemington Borough conducted a campaign this past fall.   In each of the month-long campaigns, goHunterdon, local police and community  stakeholders promoted four key safety messages:

  • Use Crosswalks
  • Stop for Pedestrians in Crosswalks
  • Obey Speed Limits
  • Heads up, Phones Down

Both the Califon and Flemington campaigns showed improvement in pedestrian and motorist safety behaviors.

Prior campaigns have been conducted in the following Hunterdon County communities: Frenchtown Borough (2015), Flemington Borough (2016, 2017), Town of Clinton (2016), High Bridge (2017), and Lambertville (2017).   For more information about Street Smart NJ in Hunterdon County: https://www.gohunterdon.org/bike-ped-programs/street-smart/overview
