Hunterdon Schools Will “Step for the Sneaker” This Month

After a long winter, it’s time to get outside, get active and allow Hunterdon K-8 students to show goHunterdon how they are safe pedestrians.

From April 19-30, 2021, students at thirteen (13) Hunterdon elementary and intermediate schools are being encouraged to “Step for the Sneaker!”

Students at Barley Sheaf Elementary School, Bloomsbury Elementary School, Califon Public School, Clinton Public School, Delaware Township School, Frenchtown Elementary School, Hampton Elementary School, Hampton Middle School, High Bridge Elementary School, Lambertville Public School, Lebanon Borough School, Milford Public School, Reading-Fleming Intermediate School  have been invited to track walking minutes each day and upload photos or drawings of what they see along the way to an online tracking tool.

The school that logs the most walking minutes will be presented with the Golden Sneaker Award, a perpetual trophy that has been used to recognize outstanding walk to school activity as part of the Hunterdon County Safe Routes to School Program each spring for more than 10 years.  The winning school will have their name added to the trophy and will earn bragging rights for 2021.  As an added incentive, this year the classroom that tracks the most walking minutes from each grade level in the county will be awarded a miniature sneaker trophy.

Due to COVID19 social distancing, students may track walking time to or from the school building as well as any walking activity they may do in their neighborhood.

“In spite of the COVID19 pandemic and varying school schedules, it is important that we encourage students to be active and to continue to reinforce pedestrian safety,” says Ryan Fisher, goHunterdon Safety Programs Coordinator.
